Historical Context: Directed by Walter Schwarzenberg, it played a crucial role in promoting Belgian Expressionism (such as Edgard Tytgat) and Surrealism, notably by being the first to sign René Magritte to a contract. The year 1930 marked the permanent closure of the legendary Galerie Le Centaure, which was swept away by the global financial crisis of the time. It had been a major hub for the Belgian Expressionist and Surrealist avant-garde.
